1960 Facts
 |
Another uneventful year for the Corvette. The 1960 Corvette
introduced the standard Nylon belted tires. The first production
of the OHV V8 with aluminum cylinder heads began. This V8 was a
powerful 315 HP, 283 CI engine. Production quality would
eventually lead to the discontinuation of the aluminum heads in
late '60. 1960 also saw the advent of aluminum radiators and
temperature controlled fan clutches.
In June, one of Briggs Cunningham's 4 Corvettes at Le Mans
finished 5th in the GT class and 8th overall. In October, the
Corvette received some free publicity when the CBS debut of
"Route 66" starred two young guys driving a 1960 Corvette
looking for adventure.
Experimental News: In Nov, the CERV I was first shown to the
public at the Riverside International Raceway. It was a mid-engined,
open-wheel, single-seat prototype racing car. In Dec, the
proposed '63 design plan was available for review in the form of
a red convertible and a silver coupe.
Even though the 2nd Generation Corvette was yet to be realized,
the first ideas for the 3rd Generation body design were
developed during a fishing trip in 1960. While deep sea fishing
in the Bahamas, Bill Mitchell landed a shark which sparked his
ideas for the future XP-775, the Corvette Shark.
DID YOU KNOW?: 1960 was the last year that the Corvette
featured "teeth" in the radiator grill. |
